Why is Faceless Girl Faceless?

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 16, 2008, 4:13 PM

People continue to ask me why I don't do stocks that show my face in a way that make me identifiable.  I like to joke that it's because I'm so ugly that the camera would break, but that's not really the reason.

So here are the reasons why, in order of descending importance.

1. I teach, and my employer frowns upon the use of myspace and facebook (frowns upon may not be a strong enough phrase) because of what students do with teachers' likenesses and personal information. In an attempt to preserve my job, I don't show my face on my stock pages -- that is, on images anyone and everyone is invited to manipulate and tell stories about.

In other words, facelessness = plausible deniability.

2. Over time, it's gotten to be sort of a trademark of my stock account, so why ruin it?

3: I think some of the neatest stock on DA is the stock that's faceless -- you can project yourself and your ideas into those images easily.

4. Some people seem to think that they have free license to treat models as if they're (sex) objects without feelings. I'd say that was due to the anonymity of the internet, but the experience was just as bad when I modeled IRL. It's nice to have an attractive outside package, but I always feel a little dirty when some jackass writes something lewd to me because they mistook dA for something besides an ART site. For whatever reason, this doesn't happen as much when I don't show my face.

Of course, some people may wonder why I bother to do model stock at all if these things are the case, but it's hard not to when my model stock tends to be some of the most popular on my account.

And people have done some really beautiful things with that stock.

I think what you're doing is fantastic & anyone that does have a problem with it is a bit, well - odd! I'm wanting to add model stock to my stock account, but I don't want to be recognised, so I think this explanation here is just the idea I was looking for - it's perfect!

I like the stock ! I can comment on a different aspect as I am a married man and I am a poet. I have only just began to do artwork and I only do it for my wife. It adds some image to what I am thinking when I write a poem.

It is hard to find stock without a face. It is hard to find stock from behind the model. I also look for these because it doesn't take away my emotions for my wife. You can see a manipulation I do and imagine it is my wife just as well as someone else. It gives it anonymity.

For someone looking at your stock like this .. they can also imagine it is the one they hold emotions for. I love your work and appreciate all that you do.

Never surrender !

What a lovely thing to say, thank you. It never occurred to me that of course faceless stock and shots from behind are rarer and therefore valuable for their rarity. Thank you again for taking the time to tell me that. :)
